The Journal of Extraordinary Children
What happens when childhood is interrupted? Lost? Justin is searching for reason, a reason, any reason to live. Such things are dangerous, though. They open one to loss, which is worse than being lost. Loss fractures the being through the fault lines forged in his mind.
Another recent loss sends Justin spinning. Slowly, however, his past finds its way back to him. Twenty years after her death, a box of his mother’s belongings is found. Journal she wrote from his childhood begin to open a door long shut. The beginning of his life, long hidden, is now his to claim, if he dares.
From honor roll student to college dropout, leader to pariah, through fantasy and insanity, and back to reality, the journey has no end in sight. Can a journey with no beginning find an end? Is recovery even possible? Can friends and family help?
A work of creative nonfiction, The Journal of Extraordinary Children explores the confusion, depression, and desperation that one can experience from childhood trauma, and how it can remain dormant and slowly emerge to create chaos. All the potential one could dream for at 18, and by 22 he was a wraith. No one knew why, least of all him.
